How to measure the canopy

Measure canopy height to the top of the leafy canopy, and use the average canopy width.
Measure row spacing center to center.
If trees vary, use the average values.

Row length/ha = 10000 / row spacing (m)
TRV (m³/ha) = tree height (m) x canopy width (m) x row length/ha x shape factor
TRV (ft³/acre) = tree height (ft) x canopy width (ft) x row length/acre x shape factor
Spray volume (gal/acre) = TRV (ft³/acre) / 1000 x orchard condition factor
Spray volume (L/ha) = spray volume (gal/acre) x 9.353946
Target width = row spacing x target fill ratio
Width reduction = max(canopy width - target width, 0)

Glossary

TRV

Short for Tree Row Volume, a per-area measure of orchard canopy volume.

Canopy shape factor

A factor that reflects whether the canopy is pointed, rounded, or square.

Orchard condition factor

A factor that reflects canopy density for the spray-volume reference.

Row fill ratio

Tree width divided by row spacing; a measure of how fully the row is occupied.

Target width

A reference width target derived from the orchard condition.

Does this give the exact pruning answer?

Can I use it for crops other than grapes?

Yes. Because it works from canopy geometry, it is useful for apples, pears, peaches, citrus, and other orchards too.

Is the spray amount a label rate?

No. It is a dilute spray reference based on canopy volume. Follow the product label separately.

What if canopy width exceeds row spacing?

The calculation still runs, but we show an overlap warning. Use it as a reference for stronger pruning or retraining.

This is a reference only. Suitable values vary by tree species, rootstock, vigor, season, wind, and equipment conditions.
Treat pruning as a width-adjustment guide, not as a count of branches or labor time.
Spray volume here is not a label rate. Follow product-specific instructions first.
