Rope Length Calculator (Depth, Tide, Safety Factor)
Seabed to surface at mooring/placement. When unsure, use the deeper value.
Difference between high and low tide (choose a safe larger value)
Multiplier for extra tension from gusts, swell, and vessel motion
Presets
Fine-tune factor
Ratio to reduce angle and shock by using longer rope
Allowance for knots, hardware, and chafe. If unsure, add more.
What is scope?

Scope is the ratio of rope length to effective depth. A longer rope reduces the line angle, softens loads, and improves holding stability. If unsure, start around 5:1 for mooring and 7:1 for anchoring (depends on conditions).

How to use (3 steps)

  1. Step Select use case and unit.
  2. Step Enter depth, tide range, factor, scope, and extra allowance.
  3. Step Check min/recommended range and decide purchase length.

Can I use this for other than mooring?
Yes. Choose Anchoring or Buoy/Drop line in the use-case selector. Suggested ratios and descriptions change accordingly.
Can I switch units?
Yes. Use the unit toggle (m/ft). Inputs and results stay in the same unit.
Which safety factor should I use?
If unsure, start with “Normal (1.2)”. If swell, gusts, or vessel motion are strong, consider 1.4–1.6. Field conditions take priority.

Safety notice

This tool provides a general estimate. Required length varies with wind, waves, current, vessel size, attachment height, seabed, chafe, stretch, rope/chain type, and local rules. Choose conservatively and make the final decision on site.
