Dry and wet basis stay explicit in the labels, so the denominator is easy to confirm at a glance.
Wood Moisture Content and Green Weight Converter
Convert moisture content, dry weight, green weight, and density for wood and biomass.
Dry basis is the default, but you can switch to wet basis and keep density tied to a reference volume.
With a reference volume, density can recover dry or green weight from a single value.

How to use
- Choose dry basis or wet basis for moisture.
- Enter dry weight or green weight.
- Add density and a reference volume when needed.
- Review the results, then copy or share the setup if you need it elsewhere.
Sample
These two sample cases match common wood and biomass use cases.
Dry-basis default
Dry basis, 50% moisture, 1,000 kg dry weight, 1 m³ reference volume
Green weight 1,500 kg, green density 1,500 kg/m³, water mass 500 kg
Wet-basis default
Wet basis, 40% moisture, 1,000 kg green weight, 1 m³ reference volume
Dry weight 600 kg, dry density 600 kg/m³, water mass 400 kg

Formulas
These are the base equations used by the tool.
-
Dry-basis moisture content = (green weight - dry weight) ÷ dry weight
-
Wet-basis moisture content = (green weight - dry weight) ÷ green weight
-
Green weight = dry weight × (1 + dry-basis moisture content)
-
Dry weight = green weight × (1 - wet-basis moisture content)
-
Density = weight ÷ reference volume
-
Water mass = green weight - dry weight
FAQ
Which moisture basis should I use for wood?
Dry basis is the default. Wood and forestry work often use dry basis, so start there. You can switch to wet basis when needed.
Why does density need a reference volume?
Because density is weight divided by volume. Matching the reference volume lets us turn density back into weight.
Can I get moisture content from green weight and density alone?
Yes. The tool treats the weight basis and density basis as complementary, so moisture can be derived once you provide a reference volume.
Can I enter 100% wet-basis moisture?
No. Wet-basis moisture must be less than 100%.
Important notes
- Wood often uses dry basis, while other fields often use wet basis. Always check the definition first.
- Solid volume, loading volume, and loose volume are not the same. Keep the reference volume consistent with the density you want.
- Species, bark, packing, and drying stage can change weight and density a lot.
