Glossary
t-km
Short for tonne-kilometre. It is transport activity calculated as weight in tonnes multiplied by distance in kilometres.
Emission factor
A value that represents CO2e emissions per t-km. It changes by transport mode and by the assumptions behind the calculation.
Multimodal
A shipment that combines multiple transport modes or multiple legs.
Formulas
- Transport activity (t-km) = Weight (t) × Distance (km)
- Leg emissions (kg CO2e) = Transport activity (t-km) × Factor (kg CO2e/t-km)
- Total emissions = Sum of all leg emissions

Can I use this result for formal emissions reporting?
This page is designed for quick estimation. For formal reporting or audit work, use primary carrier data, customer-mandated factors, or an approved internal methodology.
Can I include multiple transport legs?
Yes. Add each pickup, line-haul, ocean segment or final delivery leg separately and the tool will total them.
How should I choose the factor?
Start with the default generic profile for a quick estimate. If you have a customer requirement, a carrier value, or an internal approved factor, switch to a custom factor for that leg.
Can I use different unit systems?
Yes. The page supports km or miles and kg, lb or metric tonnes, including unit suffixes in the inputs.
Does it include warehousing or handling emissions?
No. This page focuses only on transport legs and activity-based freight emissions estimates.

- Results can change significantly depending on the factor set. If your customer or carrier provides a required factor, use that value instead of the default.
- Ocean freight varies by vessel type, route and utilization. Air freight varies strongly by distance band and service pattern.
- Enter the route distance that you actually want to estimate. The page does not calculate route distance for you.
